The Man in the Tree A theatre production on coping with natural disasters. Members from Theatre Embassy (Holland), Teater Garasi (Yogyakarta) and Tikar Pandan (Banda Aceh) joined to create a theatre play about coping with a natural disaster. As a starting point we used a man in a tree. It turned to be an eventful and sometimes very difficult project. Despite the (cultural) differences, a change of director and many fierce arguments, the group stuck together in the end and made an attractive production full of live music. The show depicted the life of everyday people trying to survive after a natural disaster. The man in the tree is above them all and looks down: unmoved, untouched he comments on the people trying to scrape their life's back together below. Accompanied by traditional Acehnese music we see a young girl looking for her teacher, followed by a coffeeshop (warung kopi) owner carrying his coffeeshop in a bag and there is even a Dutch soldier trying to disown the Acehnese of their land. Performed in Aceh and Yogyakarta juli - august 2007. The film `Coping with creation` by Maurits deals about the conflict within the group and has impressive footage of Aceh after the tsunami.
